Abstract
Background and Objective: Vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) has useful in diagnosis of vestibular neuritis, Meniere¡¯s disease, superior canal de-hiscence syndrome, and acoustic neuroma, but little is known about sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and VEMP. This stuty was conducted to evaluate diagnostic values of VEMP in patients with SSNHL.

Materials and Method: From Dec 2004 to Aug 2005, 29 patients with SSNHL were enrolled in this study. With the approval of the institute ethics committee, VEMP test and caloric tests were done in all patients. Hearing improvements were evaluated by Siegel¡¯s criteria 2 months after admission treatment.

Results: When patients were divided into two groups depending on whether they had vertiginous symptom, N23 latency, the ratio of interaural amplitude difference, IAD) were significantly different between two groups (p<0.05). The sensitivity and specificity of VEMP to caloric test were 0.93 and 0.78 respectively. In spite of these findings, there was no significant difference between VEMP and hearing improvement.

Conclusion: There was no significant correlation between hearing improvement and the results of VEMP in SSNHL.
